Exciting news emerges as a team of American and European scientists conduct a simulated study focusing a proposed space telescope, LIFE (Large Interferometer For Exoplanets), on Earth. The simulation aims to estimate the telescope’s performance when deployed into space to search for exoplanets resembling our own. The study, detailed in The Astronomical Journal, involves analyzing biosignatures, such as nitrous oxide and methylated halogens, in Earth’s synthetic atmosphere. The LIFE telescope, composed of five satellites, operates by detecting infrared radiation from exoplanets, with the ambitious goal of studying 30 to 50 Earth-sized exoplanets to uncover potential signs of life within their atmospheres. This project, overseen by ETH Zürich, marks a significant step toward unraveling the mystery of extraterrestrial life.
